A homeowner of a recently-purchased home resolves moisture problems in Frankfort, KY
Challenge
A homeowner of a newly-purchased home had plans to begin moving into the home when they noticed some mold and moisture in the crawl space. The homeowner wanted to have these problems resolved so they called The Basement Doctor of Central Kentucky.
Too much humidity in a crawl space can encourage mold growth, musty odors, wood rot and can even make the home's living space feel humid. For many homeowners, the crawl space is not thought of very often unless there is a problem that needs to be fixed down there. The crawl space is a part of the home so whatever is in the crawl space, is also in the living space, so it is important that the area is maintained and healthy.
The homeowner met with Brice, a Certified Inspector, who recommended that CleanSpace, a SmartSump Crawl Space Drainage System along with an UltraSump Battery Back-up system, SilverGlo Crawl Space Wall insulation, and a SaniDry Sedona is installed to resolve the problems in the crawl space.
Solution
A CleanSpace Liner is a plastic liner that is permanently attached to the walls and floors of the crawl space. The CleanSpace liner provides a moisture-proof barrier between the ground and the inside of the crawl space. The bright white color also reflects light and makes the crawl space easier to access.
The SmartSump Crawl Space Drainage System is used to remove water from the crawl space. The SmartSump includes a WaterWatch Alarm and an Airtight Lid with an Airtight Floor Drain. The WaterWatch Alarm will sound an alarm if the water reaches the level that the pump should have turned on or during a power failure. The Airtight Lid keeps the water from evaporating back into the crawl space, keeps things from falling into the liner and helps to quiet the pump. The Airtight Floor Drain on the lid will allow water from a plumbing leak to drain into the liner to be removed from the crawl space without allowing it to reenter the crawl space. Brice also recommended that an UltraSump Battery Back-up System is installed for added protection for the homeowner. The UltraSump will automatically start up during a power failure and comes with its own battery and charging station.
SilverGlo Crawl Space Wall Insulation is a rigid foam insulation that is infused with graphite to reflect heat. SilverGlo will help with heating and cooling costs and make the floors warmer in the winter.
The SaniDry Sedona is used to dry and filter the air. Keeping the humidity low is important to control mold, keep musty odors at bay and also keep the home from being too humid in the summer. The Special filters on the SaniDry filter out mold spores, dust mite droppings and other particulates in the air. These are often allergens for a lot of people so having a SaniDry installed in your home may help.
