Helical Piers Raise Sinking Home in Springfield, Kentucky
Challenge
Keith's home in Springfield, Kentucky, was built in 1970. He was worried because the floor in one corner of his poured foundation was sinking. Another concern he had was the location of the problem. It was just above his side door and the sidewalk leading up to it. We would have to demo the concrete leading up to his door to stabilize the foundation.
Solution
Our estimator determined that the best thing for Keith would be Helical Piers. Helical piers are installed into the ground using a helix-shaped blade. Once the pier is placed in the ground to the proper depth, heavy-duty foundation brackets are installed below the footing. This process helps transfer the weight of the home through the piers deep into competent soil. Afterward, we attempt to lift the house back to its original position. This will close any cracks that formed during the settling of the home.
When we install piers, we have to excavate some of the ground around the house. This allows us access to the strongest part of the soil, so we can transfer the weight. The concrete the homeowner had been worried about was no problem for The Basement Doctor of Central Kentucky. We were able to tear out the concrete. When we were done with the job we poured back in and created a brand new sidewalk for the homeowner.
